(Back to the Site Search)Mr. Roemer's Fifth Grade Class Daily Log,
Pinellas Park Elementary, Florida
The PBs summarize the events of each day. I'll post some almost every day (current day at the top) so you can get a feel for the kids' view of what goes on in the classroom each day, whether exciting or boring or just so-so! Fred Roemer

Max wins WTSP Channel 10's Student of the Month Award
Max won the Channel 10 Student of the Month Award today. We were pretty surprised when the TV people showed up, and even more surprised when they interviewed Max in the classroom. Way to go, Max! We're proud of you!
The Patrols were on a picnic all day. The rest of the PB's helped out in the room.

Log? There's no time these last days for the kids to write a log. I'll try to post at least one picture every day, with perhaps a short entry detailing our activities.
Working on the Yearbook
Kendra won a Superior Science Project Award
at the County Science Fair
Most of the class was gone at one time or the other today, either performing at the talent show or at the DEES (SLD) party. The rest of us packed up or prepared for a Monday PPEP Rally presentation of our class' successes. A few of us got to choose pictures for our yearbook, which, with any luck, I'll have completed this weekend.

Log? We're too busy to write a log! How about a letter to Mr. Roemer?
We are so busy at the end of the year, that we really don't have time to write a log. We have special field trips and practices all day long. Today, we had an "index card tower" race - whichever group built the tallest tower of index cards (no tape, glue, or tools) wins! The kids are really working well in groups. When we had time, we talked about closing out the year. We watched a super video of Fort DeSoto produced by Ms. Walker. And the kids noticed my eyes misting during the video and we talked about that. (After three years, I find it very difficult to think about the PB's moving on) They wrote some super letters to me. Here's one used by permission:
Dear Mr. Roemer,
Thanks you for being the best teacher in the world. For helping us when the class didn't understand something, for making learning fun, for trusting this class, for understanding our problems, for giving us a high five when we leave the room, for buying the class everything you do buy, for turning our frowns upside down. I would name everything, but I don't have enough paper.
I just want you to know I appreciate everything you have done for the class and me. I hope I can stay in touch with you. I will miss you and miss having you as a teacher.
I'll see you later,
Your Student

Busy Day - Mr. Roemer tells about it!!

We had D.A.R.E. Graduation, Music, and Marble "Races" today, which left the PB's little time for anything else, including writing a log. D.A.R.E. Graduation lasted almost two hours. All the PB's got certificates and a bag of goodies. Rebekah got a medal for her winning D.A.R.E. essay. The marble races are really "anti-races." The only rules are these:
A.) Whichever group keeps a marble moving for the longest time wins.
B.) Your group may touch the marble to start it moving, but after that it's hands off (no blowing either).
C.) You may use any material in the classroom.
We've done this a few times this year, and each time the level of thinking increases. Maybe, before the year is out, the PB's will figure out the real secret.

What Happened Today: The Protest Letter - with Contributions from Autumn, Jessica, Jennifer, Jeremy, Keyonna, and a class full of complaining PB's
First we arived at school, then Mr. Roemer talked about what we would do for the day. Then Josh turned on the T.V. and we stood up and said the pledge. The class went to P.E and either played Basketball, Scramball or Pushball.
On the way back the class messed up and we had to practice walking. We went all the way around the feild. When we were done we came back to the class and we studied for a BIG math test that was later on in the day. The test was four pages long. Mr. Roemer was on the third page when it was time for art. We lined up. Montavia was line leader. In art we finished making chairs.

When we came back we studied the last page of our test. Then we started the test. The kids in our class said the the test was not hard, it was just too long. When people finshed the test they could either go to the libary, read outside, or stay inside and read. The test lasted about an hour to a hour to fifteen minutes. When everyone finshed their test it was time to go to lunch. Our choices for lunch were sasuage pizza, fish nuggets, and cold sandwich.
When we came back from lunch we were going to have a marble race but, instead we had a dicussion about the problems we have been having with the school staff. Then we wrote a letter to (School Administrator), our (School Administrator) about the unfaireness. The picture is us writing the letter. We took suggestions from the students who have been there when these unfair things have happened. We really had a lot to write in the letter to (School Administrator).

Dear (School Administrator),
Mr. Roemer's fifth grade Polar Bears think that the school staff is not giving us a chance to prove our good behavior. Our class also thinks that you don't listen to us and don't give us a chance to talk.
The Polar Bears think that the staff believes that we are like the rest of the fifth grades who were at the school years before. We are always getting compliments from the kindergarten teachers about our behavior with the younger kids.
Also the class thinks that you do not give us a chance to say what we have to say. Most of the time when you call someone up to the office to be a witness of a problem you do not even listen to what we have to say. We feel when we talk to you it is like you are not even listening and do not even care what we are saying.
P.S. Mr. Roemer was not involved in this.
Sincerely,
The Polar Bears
Mr. Roemer's fifth grade class.

Summary of May 22, 1997 HTML by Keyonna & Tiffany

AAAAAAhhhhh, The beginning of another kind of weird day
started in Mr. Roemer fifth grade class.
While Josh waits to
pounce to the channel button on the T.V., for the Star Spangle Banner and pledge, Mr. Roemer prepears the day ahead. When the we finsh the pledge Mr. Roemer told us about the day that lies ahead of us. In a few minutes after Mr. Roemer told us about the day he yelled lineleader line up and then dismissed the other kids by clothes, watches etc. During P.E. some kids from in the talent show practiced while others play games.
After P.E. We had the most horrfying thing happen to use, we had to take an final exan for ENGLISH. This test lasted about 40 to 60 minutes long. It was dreadful because the we had to do everything we learned in ENGLISH. After the test was over we had a spelling test. Only one person was exempt and that was Keyonna. She got to read instead of taking the spelling test. Right after the spelling test was over everyone who brought in their homework got to have freetime and the people who did not bring in their homework had to complete it. People got free time for about 30 to 60 minutes.

After freetime we had Growth and Development. The boys stayed with Mr. Roemer and the girls went with Mrs. Smith's class. Some of the time it got pretty gross. Mr. Roemer was suprised to see that the boys were into baby birth and taking care of them. Then we had free time outside. Some of the girls practiced their cheerleading. That's a picture of the cheerleaders in the classroom. We had to study for our monster math exam tomorrow. Today we did rounding decimals. Then it was time to go.

C. Michael and Kendra Talk About Today

Today the polar bears day started out by going to P.E. It was another boring morning so far as the day had gone on. Until we got back back from P.E.
Then we got to played Polar Bears around The Ice Hole (it's a game.) We had to figure out how many polar bears were around the ice hole using dice. You had to try to figure out what that meant. Next we did a cookie experiment to figure out what type of cookie brand had the most chocolate chips; then average the amount. We used three types, Chips Ahoy!, Chips Delux, and Murry's generic brand.

After that we learned Health and Development of a human being. We learned about reproduction, and puberty. We talked about the stages of becoming a women or a man. We just started today, Wednesday. I think we do that for the rest of the school year.
Then we went to lunch. After lunch we came back to finish our averaging of the experiment. Mrs. B came to pick up the talent show kids and before you know it patrols were leaving and the day was over.
Tuesday, May 20th, 1997: The Day of the Play
(The picture quality keeps getting worse and worse. The cameras definitely need tune-ups! My apologies, but most of the play pics didn't come out.)

The Polar Bears performed their Civil War play today and did very well. I promised I'd dress up like a hot dog in school if they got they play off - well, they did and I am stuck looking for a hot dog suit.
Max's Play Review
Today we put on a play about the Civil War. A girl named Addy and her mother, Harriet, were fighting their way to the North. It was wonderful from the actors and actresses, to the scenery and the prop crew.
The actors and actresses were great performers. There were some that were shy or some forgot their lines or got tongue tied. But at the end it all worked out and everybody performed well.
The sets were well done for the amount of time the class had. The sets got messed-up one afternoon, but the prop crew did wonderful!
Mr Roemer bought pizza for everybody because the class did so well. He also has to dress up like a hot dog!

| Sorry, no log..Mr. Roemer played hookey!! |
Friday, May 16th, 1997:
Instead of a log today, I asked Rebekah to enter her WINNING D.A.R.E. ESSAY!! Congratulations to Rebekah! As far as today's events go, we practiced for the play most of the morning and had clubs in the afternnoon. I refused to accept 16! Civil War Reports due to sloppy work or not following directions. PB's have until Monday to fix up their reports.
Winning Dare Essay Written by Rebekah

D.A.R.E. was not only fun for me, but educational, and I learned a lot from it. I learned what drugs are, what kind of drugs there are, and how they affect you.
I also learned a little about gangs. I learned three ways to say no and they are the demanding way, in a not so sure way, and the confident way.
The demanding way is up in the other person's face, yelling, and finger pointing. The not so sure way is slouching, hands in your pockets, and not answering the person talking to you. The confident way is standing straight, hands out of pockets, and talking very clearly.
I also learned about bandwagon, which is everyone does it and sex appeal which is you'll be cool. I also learned that I don't have to do drugs because everybodys doing it. It's not cool, it's very, very bad for you.
When people try and pressure me into doing drugs, I'm going to say no the confident way. If they say
"everybody is doing it!" I'm going to say listen and I'll explain what drugs do to you and how bad they are, until it bugs them and they go away plus they will never ask me again.

Roemer Takes Another Turn!
The PB's were so busy today, nobody had a chance to write the log - so, as usual, I'll take a turn at the log. I'll try not to lecture, kids!
PE seemed normal enough to me, but then I'm not out there all the time. It looked as if the PB's were playing some sort of Flag Tag game. After PE, we had a brief spelling bee and then went to the Peer Mediation Assembly. Ms. Costello taught about peer mediation and today she brought a student peer mediation group from Boca Ciega High School to talk to us. They were good - the high school kids performed a role-play to show us how they do peer mediation. It sounds like a good deal for kids to work out problems before adults get involved. All the fifth graders got to go up and shake everybody's hand, and they each got a certificate.
We had a spelling test after the assembly. We've had U.S. state names for spelling lists for a few weeks, but this test was different. Whoever could name the capital of each state spelling word, got that word FREE, even if they misspelled it. I'm not always that nice, though.
After the spelling test, there was structured free time (is that a contradiction in terms?). Some PB's went to the media center to look up addresses for famous people, some finished up their Civil War Reports, which were due today, and some went on the computers.
We went to lunch and had chile or cheeseburgers and some PB's got yelled at by the lunch staff. Then we had extended outside time, because the PB's have been very helpful and responsible lately.
For the last hour of the day, we practiced the Civil War play. The kids wrote the play and are directing and producing it themselves. It's impressive to watch a group of fifth graders produce something without adult supervision! I left the multi-porpoise room for a while and still everybody was cool! It was funny watching the cast try to fit themselves in the wagon they made!
After the kids went home, I had to work and work and work. And here I am, still working!

Lieren and Tammy's Boring Day! (See Roemer's Rebuttal Below!!)
Today in Mr.Roemers class we went to P.E. Then we went on a field trip to Pinellas
Park Middle School. It was boring. When we came back we went to practice the play. Then we went to lunch.
After lunch
we went to outside play. Then we went to the class room to practice the songs for the play we are going to put on. And it took a long time to practice after a while it got boring.
So now here we are writing our day at school. And now you know how our day was. Thank you for reading our day summery.
Roemer's Rebuttal: Not Boring!
C'mon!! Today wasn't as boring as all that! We had cheerleading practice and play practice at our school, and Middle School Orientation at Pinellas Park Middle School. The staff and students at the middle school did a wonderful job! I enjoyed seeing some old friends (some of whom I had as students in kindergarten and first grade!!!) We learned about what to wear at PE in middle school and about the dreaded dressing out. The sixth grade band was great! Many PB's decided it might be a great idea to join one of the organizations they learned about at the orientation. I will, however, admit that the hotdog lunch at our school may have been just a bit boring.

HTML and Summary By: J.G. and M.F.
After The bell we turned the TV
on and said the pledge. Next we talked about our
plans for the day. Soon, it was time for P.E. the
field was still wet from the rain so we had on
court activities. We had Wiffle Ball, bars, teather
ball and Guard The Ball. As soon as coach let us go everyone ran to wiffle ball.
After we got back from P.E. we decided to go to the multipurpose room to practice the play. We went through the play twice, once with interrupting and once with out interrupting, then after that we sung our song, "Let Our People Go." When we got back to the classroom we had a starring contest where you weren't allowed to laugh, and everybody won.
After that the star kids left and the rest of the kids did improvisation. This is where we did, "Roses are Red"in different emotions.
After that we went to lunch where they were serving potatoe turdbate and hot ham and cheese sandwich.
After lunch we went to Dare in the Multipurpose room. We did Dare Jeopardy against Ms. Smith's class. Dare Jeopardy is where we are asked about stuff we learned in Dare. It came out a tie between the two classes.
After that we went back to class and packed up and went home.

Keyonna's Day Summary Of May 12,1997
HTML By: Keyonna
After the bell rung everyone turned to face the T.V. for the pledge and the Star Spangled Banner. After that we went to P.E. where we had choices of Man from Mars, Basketball, Pushball, and Bars. Man from Mars was the most popular game for May 12, 1997.
Then Mr. Roemer to talked about the week's newsletter. After P.E. we went to the the Multipurpose Room where we practiced for the play. We practiced the two songs and practiced the play a few times. We had to have fill ins to fill in two parts because the actors were absent. We stayed in the Multipurpose Room for about 2 hours. Soon things got out of control and we had to come back to the room and do an assignment. Our assignment was Math page 394 problems 1-14.
Afterward when everyone completed their assignment the star students left and Mr. Roemer gave the other kids time to do research or play an educational game. Most kids were talking instead of working while Mr. Roemer left the class, but a few did their work and got help from their fellow students.
Next we went to lunch and had Sloppy Joe or Chicken Patty for our choices. Next Mr. Roemer talked about the big math and english quiz. After that Mr. Roemer gave us an assignment to prepare for the big english quiz. Our assignment was to write to our most liked famous person and ask them what their favorite five book are. Mr. Roemer then told us to write the internet address if they perfer that instead and if we could put their returned letter on the net. Then that we made posters for our play.
