Thankful Explorers

Polar Bear Work - 11/21/97

The Polar Bears have been doing research on explorers. Here's what we think our explorers might have been thankful for:

John Cabot - By Christina S.

Hi! My name is John Cabot. I'm an explorer from Genoa, Italy. I'm thankful for making a successful journey and having a loving wife and kids.
It took a while to get where I got and I'm thankful for that. Going on the seas and enjoying the waves of joy. Sailing with my son and making it to America.
Exploring North America is what I did. Wondering what would happen on my journey. I had a safe first trip, but the second I disappeard. I'm not thankful for disappearing, but for all the struggles I pulled for you.
Maybe Thanksgiving is when I'll be thankful. I can be thankful all year round. So enjoy your Thanksgiving.

Ponce De Leon - By Brian (Top)

Hi, my name is Ponce De Leon. I am an explorer. I named Florida. Are you thankful for something? Well I sure am. I'm thankful for being Governer of Puerto Rico and Bimini. Second, I'm thankful for being able to be an explorer. Plus, for having three ships that I could sail on. Third for being admired so much that I have had dozens of reports done on me. Fourth, for being able to explore what no one has before. Last I am thankful for trying to find the Fountain of Youth.

Mathew Henson - By Whitney (Top)

Hello. My name is Mathew Henson. I'm thankful for...
Being one of the first ones to make it to the North Pole. I'm also thankful for not giving up. I'm thankful that I tried hard and I was a better man than anyone else. I am thankful that there's a story about me.
I'm thankful for not getting hurt on the journey. And most of all I'm thankful for not dying on the way.

Ferdinand Magellan - By Channing (Top)

I am Magellan. I'm thankful for my ships and also my crew. I'm thankful for being in charge of the ships and crew. I'm also thankful for not giving up. Most of all I'm thankful for being able to help people when I stop.
I'm thankful for people that helped us when we stopped. I'm also thankful for going through the strait safely without dying. I'm thankful because when my crew wanted to turn back I wouldn't. I also wouldn't turn back for food or supplies.
Most of all I'm thankful for having something to eat, even though it was rats and other stuff.

Henry Hudson - By La'Sandra (Top)

Hi, my name is Henry Hudson. I am thankful for making it through America by sailing southward and making it through the arctic. My men called me I fool, but I know that they didn't mean it. My ship, The Discovery, left England. My men saw many great ice masses floating. We got stuck on a piece of ice in a large body of water. I'm thankful that I made it out of there alive.
