Polar Bear Civil War Report
Due on Friday, April 25, 2008
This report represents major grades in social studies, writing, and homework. There will be time to work on it in class and, later in March, very little homework other than this report.
Written Report - What You Must Hand In:- A Written Report in a Folder: It may be typed (1½ spaced in a plain font) or
handwritten in cursive. (See the report requirements.) You should use at least five sources of information.
- Index Card Notes: Make sure your name is on the back of each card and they are bundled with a rubber band.
Oral Report:-
Length of Report: From 1½ to 3 minutes.
- Notes: You may use index cards or your outline, but you may not use your written report.
- Visual Aides: Any maps, charts, posters, computer presentations, or other aides to enhance your oral report will give extra credit.
Requirements - What Your Written Report Should Have:
-
Outline: This has been taught in class and should be completed before writing the report.
- Title Page: Your title page MUST be in the format shown in the picture at right.
- Table of Contents: Listing the page location of the main topic headings. The contents should reflect the main headings in the outline.
- Body of the report: The report itself should include the headings shown in the outline. The report should be logically organized according to your topic. It should also be factually complete and well-written.
- List of sources: (bibliography:) The proper format for this is available in our
classroom or by clicking on this bibliography link.
Grading:-
Neatness, effort, organization, and language count. The guidelines listed here must be followed. Many previous reports have lost points simply because they didn’t have a title page or the title page was not in the format shown.
- I will check spelling and sentence formation. You will lose many points if you copy information word-for-word. I will grade your outline and index cards very carefully.
- You will not do well if you write just one draft or if your report is thrown together carelessly.
- You will not do well if you wait until the last minute to do your report. (Do you think I can’t tell?)
- You will not do well if you don’t know your topic!
Remember, the class will ask you a few questions after your oral report. Please make sure you know your topic very well. Think of this report as your proof to me that you are ready for middle school.

You must use index cards to write your report. They help you to organize your information.
I will look carefully to see that the index cards are used to write the report. A few PBs have been writing reports and then making up the index cards.
The index cards should be used during your oral report.
It is a good idea to put your name or your initials and number on the back of each card.
