Major grades in social studies, homework, and writing. I will give time in class to work on it, but most of the work is your homework. The due date is Friday, January 9, 2009 . Your choice of a country must be approved.

Written Report - What You Must Hand In:

1. A Written Report in a Folder: The report must have a title page. It may be typed (1½ spaced in a plain font) or handwritten in cursive. The report must be organized with topic headings as shown in class. You should use at least four sources of information (books, magazines, newspapers, computer software, almanacs, encyclopedias.)

3. An Outline: Instead of the index cards we used for our first report, notes should be taken using the outline. The format for the outline will be given in class. Topics appropriate to a report on a country will also be handed out.

3. A Map: Hand-drawn, not traced. The map should included the major cities, rivers, and landforms of your country.

Grading:

I will grade for completeness of information. Organization is important. The major topics having to do with your country should be included in a logical order (topic suggestions will be given in a handout as an outline form). You should KNOW all of the details about your country. Neatness, language, spelling, and following guidelines will also be part of the grade.

Points Off: Reports handed in late will be marked off one letter grade for each day late. I will deduct major points for presenting information word-for-word from your resources.

To Get a Zero: Don't do anything. Getting a zero is easy.

To Get a D or an F: Hand in the report late. Don't have a title page or folder. Write sloppily and misspell a lot of words (especially the name of your country). Forget about paragraphs and headings. Don't worry about punctuation. Ignore due dates. Use sentence fragments and run-on sentences. Don't bother to rewrite your report. Copy the information word-for-word. Ignore the guidelines. Don't learn much about your country. Fake reading your sources. Don't bother using the outline for notes or do the outline at the last minute and include just a few topics.

To Get an A or a B: Take notes on the outline first. Follow the guidelines and due dates exactly. Have complete information about the important topics having to do with your country on the outline and in your report. Make sure everything is in your own words. Rewrite your report. Spell carefully and write neatly. Use correct paragraph structure. Include an opening and a closing. Watch your punctuation and capitalization. Get rid of sentence fragments and run-on sentences. Include a well-done, neat, and complete outline.

Extra Credit: Use at least six sources and have a complete bibliography at the end of your report.
